COMPLIMENTARY

Ketchup and Mustard are complimentary, leave me out of it, please and thank you.

A friend and I were talking the other day about how hard it is to take a compliment, which if you think about it, should be the easiest thing to accept! Someone is saying something nice to you, something kind, and (hopefully) genuine. How do we respond? With self deprecation, sarcasm, anddeflection, which is my method of choice.

Leave it to Comedy Central to point out just how bad people (women) are at accepting compliments! Warning- if you are shy, timid, reserved, pious, conservative, or are simply easily offended this video is not for you… I recommend you have a less ridged friend watch it with headphones and then give you a PC play by play.

Why is it so easy to tear ourselves down? To critique and maim, rather than encourage and compliment? Doing ourselves more harm than good.

I wrote about this being a big issue in my life over the summer. While I would like to report that I am a monument of poise and prosperity, I fear my security is more pillow fort than Fort Knox…that is to say, my walls aren’t as strong as they should be (I pick at them, first with tweezers, then, you know, a garden shovel, and from time to time I pack the cracks with TNT and watch the whole thing explode, [just for shits and giggles]).

Now, I would like you all to know that you are beautiful, amazing, and wonderful human beings… the correct response is to say “yes, yes I am!” and walk away (don’t worry I won’t go all Regina George on you… unlike her, I actually want you to feel good about yourselves).

xx
