Do you remember that play ground chant? The one that went something like this:
"Like totally for sure, I just got a manicure. The sun, I swear, is bleaching out my gorgeous hair. Two to three, three to four? I don't know the stupid score! Go, go, fight, fight, gee I hope I look alright!"
This chant, this mantra of the Valley Girl, always made me laugh because I found the idea of it all so hilarious. Not to mention the fact that as you chanted, the words would naturally roll out of your mouth, dragging on the vowels, making it sound like you had a small child hanging from your jaw.
Even though I live in California, this idea of the Valley Girl still seems so foreign, no one I interact with sounds like that. But then-
A week or two ago I was working a photo shoot with the dreamy Kelly Golightly and the amazing Daniel Collopy, when one of us made a joke about the Californians. Daniel nearly dropped his camera in sheer joy as he told us about a video from the 80s of an actual Valley Girl COMPETITION!
Of course, where would we be without my personal favorite Valley Girls?
Needless to say we all stopped what we were doing in order to find the aforementioned clip on youtube. And let me tell you something, it does not disappoint! The hair, the accent, the style, the mindset, with their powers combined (captain planet anyone?), form the most magical of moments to ever come out of that heavily permed, spandex ridden, satin covered era.
By all means, do yourself a favor and go watch the clip. After you have finished, follow it up with a little more Moon Zappa, and then perhaps some Robin Sparkles (you are welcome) because they are totally tubular!
xx
P.s. Nick Cage was in a movie entitled Valley Girl! Does the magic know no end.
