Can we just talk about the trends of the early 2000s?! At the time we all thought the 80's and 90's were bad, now we welcome overalls and Birkenstocks with open arms over the tacky trimmings of the millenniums infant years.
For starters everything was monogrammed! Your rhinestone necklace held an ornate capital of your initial, your clutch or boldly colored purse was also monogrammed, as was your bracelet and any other surface that could hold a letter upon it.
Also let's (not) talk about boot cut jeans. If you were seen in anything but a good pair of belled denim your social standing simply went down in the world. Silvers, American Eagle, Hollister, and Abercrombie all pushed you into low slug, ass tight, boot cut, stretch denim that truly only looked good on 5% of the population (Rachel Zoe being one of them... to this day she looks amazing in bell bottoms!).
Pleated tartan mini skirts, oddly fitted (not so) crop tops perfectly revealing between 1 and 2 inches of midriff. Tacky phrased apparel flooded the teen fashion scene, 'who's your daddy' 'paws off' and 'princess' were among some of the more cliched favorites. Velour was the fabric of choice for all things jump suit and rhinestones became the STD of the accessory world; and there I sat, an innocent bystander getting sucked into it all (and loving every moment).
Can we quickly address one other thing; the rampant tanning bed crisis of the early 2000s? How did that become a thing?! It was a time when every where you went smelled of tanning lotion and burned skin and girls flaunted the 1x1 inch pattern of pale skin on their otherwise freakishly tan bodies. You were ranked upon sticker choice- slutty girls got the playboy bunny, fun girls got the palm tree, sweet girls got hearts... it was a simple system really. I am now convinced my entire generation will die of skin cancer for having (willingly) cooked ourselves like holiday hams every day for years on end (I remain freakishly pale... I think I'm in the clear, but who knows).
The dawn of the new millennia was certainly a welcome one (at the time) but I am happy we have since left it in the past... granted, ten years from now I will be ranting about how we allowed Birkenstocks back into fashion in 2014, but for the time being I will roll with the punches, flaunt my favorite fashions and learn to regret nothing.
