I don't know if it's the weather or just the phase of life that I am in, but I am feeling hella nostalgic (yes, I did just use the term 'hella', it felt right, you know?).
Being nostalgic is not knew for me. I like the warm fuzzy feelings that the past can well up... what I don't particularly enjoy is the twinge of pain that inevitably pricks my heart; I have a sensitive heart (just ask my vood-doo Dr. lady), it can't handle that kind of trauma too regularly.
For most of you out there in the world the season is quite literally changing right now- Summer is giving way, sighing it's final breaths into the rustling leaves of Fall (or if you are in Australia it is Spring time... which boggles my goggles... the earth and the rotations there of are magically weird to me, BUT the season is changing none the less). Here in LA we get a little bit of change, cooler weather, hotter weather, a few gray days (like today), jacket weather, etc, but we don't have SEASONS, which bums me out to be honest. Heres why-
I think we, as humans, need to see the change of season, they are a physical manifestation of a lifecycle unfolding before our eyes; blossoming, blooming, thriving, fading, falling, returning to the earth.
Seasons represent change, and while some of us may not like change, change is good, it is healthy, it is essential to living a good life.
I recently listened to a podcast on the changing of seasons (shocking I know, I NEVER listen to podcast... ok I realize this is in writing so you may not have picked up on that cue, I am being sarcastic, I listen to podcasts all of the time). The talk was not on the physical seasons of nature, but the seasons we experience as a humans- relationships, jobs, life style, etc. I can get a little tired of this word when used for our personal lives, but to be honest, it really is so ideally suited for this kind of speak that I must, in this instance, cave to it's perfection.
ANYWAYS.
Seasons.
In this podcast they spoke of how we need to learn when things are ending and how to morn that loss- how to feel the change and not let it consume us, how to feel the change and not deny it's truth. There is also the issue of not recognizing when a season has passed... or not wanting to see that a time in your life (a job for instance) has ran it's course and needs to come to an end.
The thing is, it isn't that you can't survive living a life with out learning how to recognize the changing of the seasons, but I don't think you will ever learn to live fully without it. Like the eternal chasing of youth or success, things which seem so worthy but are, in all actuality, endless holes we dig, never reaching the bottom. When we learn to embrace the change of season, the growing older, the changes in our relationships, the losses and gains, the joy and the sorrow, the success AND the failure, only then can we see the fullness of the depths. That is not to say you can't be successful by the way or that you can't 'stay young', it is more to call into question what you are orienting your life around and how it manifests through you.
When you are still, when you listen to your being, do you hear the leaves of change falling around you? Do you feel the change in the wind? I know I do and I must confess, I think it's about damn time.
