Here's the thing- I am a 28 year old woman (yes, I'm putting my age on the internet... what of it?) who is still trying to master the art of 'the list'.
The thing is, I know, just how much smoother things (life) go(es) when I actually have a list to follow. It eases the tension in my brain, it calms the tension in my shoulders, knowing that if (and WHEN) I forget something, I can just double check my list and make sure everything is all taken care of. Lists are a beautiful thing, a gift to the scattered mind.
I am the first to admit that while I am often prepared and (seemingly) on top of my shit externally, my brain is having a field day, running in circles, chasing it's tail, doing loop-de-loops etc. trying to remember all the things I told myself not to forget (the stress knot in my shoulder is getting tight just thinking about it). I love being prepared, I love knowing what I have to get done and if I plan when (and how) I will get said thing done I will feel even better!
At this moment I have a notebook sitting next to my computer with about 4 (maybe 5) lists in it. I have lists on lists... I have reminders... I have notes... I have reminders of my lists and notes... it is all very scientific I assure you (and by very I mean not at all). I have a to-do list, a grocery list, a prep list, a reminders list... and I think another one, but I can't be to sure, who can tell?...
The thing is, I know myself... I get in the habit of 'the list' for a little while and then I loose interest. I become enthralled with how efficient I can be, how accomplished I feel when I put a perfect little check mark by each item (yes, I totally add things after I do them so that I feel even more accomplished). But then, when it's not shiny and fun anymore, my list making goes by the way side (p.s. if you know where that colloquialism came from, do tell). What is a girl to do?! I am left wondering if there a magical age in life where this habit sticks? Is it a character trait you are born with? Can it be learned? Did I not get the 'list making genome?! Is it like red hair? Does it skip a generation?
I have to admit, Drew seems to have mastered the art of 'the list', perhaps he will let me be his apprentice and learn all of his 'being on top of shit' ways. Until then, I will do my best and (try to) forget a little less (first things first... learn to use iCal and 'sync' it with my date book).
