That phrase, 'one name' may conjure up memories of saying the pledge of allegiance "one nation, under God"... etc... maybe not, but it does for me (weird I know). However, I am not talking about our nation, nor am I talking about 'the big man upstairs'... I am talking about the individuals in this world who transcend commonality, who defy cultural norms and simply go by- one name.
I am also not talking about, as Meg Ryan says in You've Got Mail, the generation of cocktail waitresses who have seemingly lost their last names, "Hi I'm Kimberly, Hi I'm Janice"... I am talking celebrity, icons, individuals-
BEYONCE
Cher
Madona
Prince
Iman
KANYE
Sting
Bono
Bjork
Beck
Pink
Fergie
Eminem
Twiggy
Neo
Nelly
Fabio
RIHANNA
Adele
Oprah
Usher
ETC.
Real names/last names need not apply. Why? Because they ARE NOT NEEDED! We all know the alternates, we know the last names, but who needs um?
For some reason this idea, the idea of being so distinctive in your own right, that you can get away with being WHOM EVER you so choose, is rather amazing to me. What do you think? Would you change your name? Does it change your identity? Does it (in fact) hold some mystical power!? I suppose I may never know, I am more of a traditional 'first and last' kind of a girl, then again Zahn does have a nice ring to it.
