I have had a long standing love affair with Project Runway. There is something about the desperate energy, the rush of ideas and creativity which, simultaneously, gives me an ulcer and immense inspiration. My heart races, I pick my favorites, and hold my breath all season long.
When I saw the posters for Under the Gunn I wasn't sure what to think. Let's be honest, sequels aren't usually all that great, especially in the reality tv world (though to be fair, Project Runway All Stars is retty great)! The show features mentors from previous seasons of Project Runway (Nick, Mondo, and Anya) who are molding teams of fresh talented designers competing for a massive prize (for mentor and protégée alike!). There are new judges who are a force to be reckoned with, which seems risky at first glance... BUT let me be the first to tell you, this show is fantastic. Truthfully, I don't know if the show it self is that great but it does have a secret weapon which makes it amazing in my book. TIM GUNN, I adore him.
If I didn't love him before, his interview on Fresh Air certainly sealed the my fate. He is an even tempered, inspirational fashion guru, who is just about the cutest thing to ever live; which is incredibly considering where he came from (insert boarding schools and a mental institution here).
Under the Gunn is full of fashionistas over dramaticising everything (per-usual) and mentors who 'care' too much. At the end of the day however, it is all worth it for that "make it work" moment.
