Happy Halloween everyone!
This time of year is rife with fond memories of running through the streets, going door to door, dressed as any number of creature, collecting candies from strangers (and no one seems to think twice about how strange this tradition actually is).
I mean… I remember being knee high to a grass hopper going around the neighborhood in a white sweat suit, covered in black electrical tape poke-a-dots, a white ski mask over my face with black socks sewed on for ears and one on my bum for a tail (I was a dalmatian, duh!). My mom was a crafty little minx… a costume wizard. She could turn pajamas into a Princess Jasmine costume (I stole the necklace she used as my crown and still wear it to this day). There was the year my brother was Super Mario and I was Princess Toadstool. The year I was an indian and he was a cop? (not sure on that one) The year we were the Duracell family (stroke of genius. Mom cut different boxes in half, put double sided mega tape on the open back, covered the front with black construction paper and copper fabric on the top, wrote ‘Duracell” up the center and what ‘size’ we were under that, AA, AAA, D, C, etc.)!
As I grew up, Halloween lost its shine. I still loved dressing up but going door to door is frowned upon once you reach a certain age (see the year we went trick-or-treating in high school, I was “in the military” out of desperation and my older brother was Mrs.Doubtfire, complete with amazing fake boobs and tartan skirt).
The myths and magic of this holiday are enchanting, after all who doesn’t love a jack-o-lantern, copious amounts of candy, and a good scary story told by a fire! There are so many amazing traditions attached to this bewitching night; did you know that in Irish culture they used to bake a ring, a coin, and a rag into a cake to eat on Halloween?! If you got the ring you would be married, the coin you would be rich, and the rag would turn you into a pauper! (learned that gem from Boardwalk Empire) Ah superstition so fun when they are not your own to carry.
Yesterday I (appropriately) asked you ‘Who do you want to be today?’, after all, is there ever a better time to dress up in someone else’s clothes than on Halloween!? So I ask you, who will you be? What will you be doing to celebrate? Whoever, however, wherever it may be, I wish you a devilishly good time.
