You know how they say people in abusive relationships always return to the abuser? I feel like I am in one of those relationships. But you guys, it is so good otherwise. I mean, I get a lot of enjoyment out our time together, I dream about it with fondness, my heart races when I think of it… though deep down I know… it is so, so bad for me.
Cheese, my abuser, is what makes some peoples worlds go round. It is a food group so unique unto itself, so sacred, people have formed clubs around it! (paired with good wine of course) Entire countries would starve if you took away their cheese; people groups would entirely cease to exist, for living would become but a dolesome task to perform day in and day out (Charcuterie really is a reason for living… it is an art form and a gift to the culinary world).
The varieties available make my head swim; the mere imagining of the flavors and textures is enough to make my mouth water. Alas, I am not allowed to sample, for though I love a 9 year cheddar, a sweet melty brie, or the tang of cotija crumbled over tacos, I fear the wrath of my internal organs (those bastards!) so I abstain (most of the time).
The good news is, I am not averse to the non-cow varietal of cheeses. Learning this glorious news was like lifting a dark veil that had been shrouding my life. If you too are lactarded you understand what I am talking about.
For all of my fellow cheese lovers (far different form a cheese-head) here are a few, non traditional cheeses for your sampling, you may just be surprised-
Ewephoria, this sheep milk cheese (get it!?) is absolutely divine, Drew can’t get enough of it.
Simply Sheep is a creamy alternative that melts like a dream and is incredible mixed with sheep yogurt and pepper atop a salad.
Goat Cheddar from Trader Joe’s is an addiction in my life.
And for those of you who abstain from the dairy world all together, give Diaya a try, the havarti wedge is my personal favorite.
Best of luck in your cheesy adventures. May they be overly caloric and paired with a deep glass of wine.
