YOU GUYS!
I just found out that the Banded Woolly Bear (the orange and black fuzzy caterpillars) have Anti Freeze in their circulatory fluid, so even after being frozen solid all winter, they can thaw out and return to creeping about in the spring; eventually spinning a cocoon and turning into a Isabella Tiger Moth!
Magic.
I am forever amazed by the world around us. Little things, like caterpillars being frozen solid, surviving and fulfilling their destiny in mothdom blows my mind. It reminds me of mystery and wonder. It leads me to believe that this world, in all its war, chaos, natural disaster and destruction can remain beautiful and be restored.
All the life pulsing, hidden, frozen, waiting to emerge at the right time… gives me hope.
Humbled, amazed, wide eyed, and full of wonder; remain curious my loves.
xx
p.s. after looking at a million photos of them, I have decided caterpillars are creepy! No pun intended. I don’t know how I let those fuzzy little critters crawl all over me as a kid…then again they are really cool… so I can’t blame my 5 year old self for plucking the furry buggers from their natural habitats and placing them into “hotels”(shoe boxes with grass clippings and a few leaves) to “study” their ways.
