I am my mothers daughter. This is a reality that shows itself from time to time through the strange quirks in my personality, which I have mentioned before.
For instance, I tend to have over exaggerated body language when speaking with others. If I am in a situation where full body expression is prohibited or exceptionally frowned upon, I do my best to realize my limitations and speak with my hands. That’s not all either. I make strange sounds. You know, at puppies, kittens, babies, anything small and particularly cuddle worthy, you bet your ass a high pitched “OOOOOoooooOOO” is going to leave my mouth, I can’t help it. I am also a connoisseur of voices, sound effect, etc. a talent my mother unknowingly cultivated.
All of this came flooding to mind this morning as I stood in my kitchen waiting for my coffee to re-heat (I KNOW! It is a terrible thing to do). Given that I don’t have a microwave I am forced to pour my coffee from its comfy home in my Pyrex mug (yeah, pyrex makes mugs! My mind was blow as well, you can thank my dear friend Eavie for this discovery, she is a genius thrifter with magical powers I am convinced) into an enamel steel mug placed with care over a burner on my gas stove; very campy. As I watched the flames gingerly kiss the bottom of the cup I was taken back in my memory.
My mom would place her mug into the microwave for the umpteenth time, set it for 30 seconds and walk back over to the counter where we were doing school work and help us with our math. The buzzer would sound and she would ignore it for an additional 30 seconds before fetching her steaming cup of re-heated coffee. At some point she would set the cup down, forgetting all about it, and would then have to repeat the process all over in an hour.
The benefits to this are two fold. First, you get to sip on a steaming cup of coffee, the temperature just under scalding so you can feel the heat as it slides down your throat. Second, the cup is hot, so holding it is a dream in and of itself. Poor circulation runs rampant in our family, so any opportunity to heat our frigid fingers is welcome.
Unlike Mac n’ Cheese, reheated coffee is not better than it’s original, intended form, however, it most certainly does the trick. And I will say, for all of the quirks I have, this one is one I intend to keep.
