About a week ago Drew turned to me and asked, “Can I say something?”
“Of course.” I replied.
“I miss home…” he sighed.
“Why couldn’t you say that?! I completely understand, I miss it too… so much.”
“I know… It’s just… when I was talking to Caton last night and he was talking about the holidays and all of the parties and friends… It made me sad.”
“I couldn’t agree more, I looked at photos from the weekend and they made my heart hurt. I love you though, we have each other, and we can make the holidays special out here” I said with tightness forming in my chest, my ribs constricting my ever crippled heart.
He raised his eyes sheepishly. “But what if we go home for Christmas?”
I looked over at him “Don’t you F*$# with me!”
“No seriously, I thought about it a lot last night and I think we should.”
I smiled, “YES! Of course I want to! That would be amazing. I mean… I know we talk about how great it’s going to be starting our own traditions and though it would be fantastic I’m sure, going home would trump staying alone in a second!” my heart was beating violently, threatening to pry my ribs apart, jump right out and break dance on the counter next to me.
“Ok!” He beamed at me, “Let’s do it.”
I made a few phone calls, looked at tickets, made a few more calls, booked the tickets, and that was that.
And so, I am afraid my Christmas day photos were all a ruse, my front is broken, and I am exposed as a lier (with the best of intentions I assure you).
For now, hello from Michigan, there will be more story to come soon.
