Someone asked me the other day if I am constantly judging the hair and makeup of those around me... a career hazard they called it. Had they asked me that question two or three years ago I would have stuck my nose in the air and replied "YES". However, in my wizened old age (HA!), I find it more and more difficult to truly cast shade on someones appearance.
As with most things in life we can only control so much. We make choices based upon what we think looks best or feels the best... not necessarily what may, in all actuality, be the best. Most people are creatures of habit, we get into ruts and stay where we feel "safe"- why do you think the ticket clerk of my high school theater group wore bright blue eye shadow, heavy black eye liner, mom jeans, turtlenecks, and had a hair cut that looked like a nuclear mushroom cloud exploded on her head?! Because someone told her in 1985 that she was the most beautiful she had ever been... and so she stayed in 1985 for the rest of her life.
The fact is, at the heart of it, everyone has some form of beauty about them. I'm not saying everyone looks like Giselle (nor should they), but I am saying that if you can open your eyes for just one moment, pull back the shades you have drawn, and look out at the world, you would be amazed at the beauty that has been sitting right in front of you all along. There are taste levels that may differ and styles that may not... capture your attention... at the heart of it however, there is something stunning about a person just being fully themselves (think princess and the toad...he's ugly, she sees past that and finds her prince! Disney really did a number on our generation, did it not!?).
Meanwhile, a different note (on the same page) would be that there are incredible, breathtaking, physically stunning people, who are the most ugly creatures on the inside... but that, my darlings, is a tale for another day.
What do you find beautiful?
