Dear Readers,
Riddle me this. At what point in life does one actually become an adult? Also, what does 'becoming an adult' actually look like?! I mean honestly, you can't tell me that the guy sitting down the bar making fart jokes is a boneafide adult form bygones past. What would your grandfather think? (I can tell you what my grandfather would think, he would be horrified at the lack of decency, then walk up to said gentleman, and tell him that his father raised him better than to discuss such things in public).
If you follow my ramblings, you know that I have mused on this subject in the past, but it was more on the personal responsibility, bills, ect. side of things. My question today is more based on the actual, legitimate, thing that is adulthood in this day and age.
So many people peak in high school; clinging to those frivolous years like the Real Housewives cling to their fleeting youth. You know these people, the ones who reminisce about Homecoming and the game that changed it all. The ones who still dress in Abercrombie, play beer pong and drink Jager for fun. Even if they have a job that requires them to wear business attire and go to an office building, where they will drink their Starbucks and return emails for 8.2 hours each day... are they really grown up? (also if this is your life I pass zero judgment... I just feel for you).
Men, are no longer available in the Don Draper model (which is ok for everything, except the suits, bring back well tailored suits I beg of you!). Women no longer fill the shoes of Betty Draper or Marilyn Monroe (again, thank god! Who has time for that much primping!? But a sense of decorum certainly couldn't hurt).
I may sound like a 90 year old, but you guys, the girls have gone wild and the boys are in a Situation, and I am just not sure how to feel about it. We will find the answer to what went wrong someday... for now however, we can simply look at the MTV archives, become teen moms (which has so many seasons it is depressing!) and waste our lives on other various juvenile pursuits. Then again, if we are taking cues from pop culture the Pussy Cat Dolls poetically summarized the desires of our youth (also the hotly debated lyric is groupies not boobies just saying) pretty perfectly if I do say so myself...
Never fear, all hope is not lost, the entire world can't become Jersey Shore over night, and the youth of today, may just make for a better tomorrow (I believe in those selfie obsessed little monsters!). As for having moments of immaturity, we all do it (even my 50+ year old father dies at the fart scene in Rocket Man [blast from the past, am I right!]) I have the humor of a 12 year old boy, and we all need to let loose from time to time. After all, what is the point of growing up if you are going to turn into a ridged pencil pusher the moment the clock strikes midnight on your twenty first birthday (what a tragedy that would be!).
My only request is for grown women to stop flashing their knockers in public (mardi gras is exempt on a technicality and Dita VonTeese gets a hall pass) and for grown men to show some chivalry from time to time (Yes, you sir, WHO SHUT THE DOOR IN MY FACE). The world is complex, youth is fleeting, and we have but one life to live... are there any other cliches we need to cover?
Take this all like a tequila shot wont you? (you know, with a grain of salt).
xx
*Also, I'm getting older very soon... perhaps this is why my brain is tuned-in to the perception of 'who we are' etc.
