THE WEDGE

I, once again, have a confession to make, another love affair to declare, and this one I was far less excepting of. I… am currently obsessed (and have been for sometime, ask Nichole and Adeshola, they are just as involved as I am in this scandal) with wedge sneakers. I’m not proud of it, I realize they are merely shoes and therefore… Ok, I can’t even continue with that sentence. Who am I kidding, I LOVE shoes! I am a woman, it is ingrained in my DNA.

Shame? Maybe I should feel you, but I don’t.

This love affair first started two years ago, when I discovered the Isabel Marant wedge sneaker that made all other shoes fade in comparison. They were sleek, puffy, well designed and comfortable! Could it be? Are these the perfect shoe? Every celebrity was soon spotted in these street style gems, quickly cementing the look a place in fashion and trend.

I realize these shoes may be old news, but you guys, I have coveted them for so long, and I am ashamed to say that I recently purchased… a nock-off version… FROM TARGET! I know, I’m guilt stricken, but should I be? Here is where I’m at with this purchase, I long for the originals, but the cost is astronomical for such a “trend” item (running $350-700 per pair), Steve Madden made a nock-off for around a hundo, which isn’t bad, but I wavered a little too long and they were off the shelves before I made up my mind. So, low and behold, I’m wandering through the ever absorbing isles of Target, mind you I went to pick up house hold items, and stumbled upon the shoe section and a pair of black, puffy, wedge sneakers called my name . They were $35 and perfect, granted they can’t even begin to hold a candle to the original Marant beauties, but what can?!

If I am going to buy into a trend that is so niche I want to make sure it’s something that I love and will wear on the regular. I considered purchasing the Maddens or even a pair from Nasty Gal, but the cost was still steep enough for me to hesitate. Not that they are that expensive, but this girl has a lot of other purchases that take a more prominent role, so the shoes took the back burner. I have worn my new sneakers on multiple occasions since they entered my life and I have gotten more compliments on those little sneaks then I have on a pair of $300 booties I bought for a party a while back.

The fashion world is a strange jungle of hierarchy and trend. I am still learning the ropes and drooling over and being inspired by the “it” pieces I can’t afford, but I am also figuring out what needs to be invested in (this Celine bag perhaps!?) and what can be purchased in the lower echelons. That is not to say that if a boat load of money landed in my lap today I wouldn’t rush out and by all things of French design (what is it with the French!? They do fashion so well, look chic and effortless, I am now beginning to understand the Man Repellers love of them a little more).

Where do I draw the line? It starts with a pair of shoes or a jacket and the next thing you know your purchasing attire from Walmart! Sweet Jesus I hope that never happens.

What about you? Where do you draw the line?

xx
